Elliptical trainers provide an effective cardiovascular workout that combines upper and lower body flexibility and coordination into one impact-free motion. By emulating the natural motion of your foot while supporting your heel throughout the stride, elliptical trainers are much easier on your knees and joints. In addition to feeling more natural while working out, regular use on ellipticals will increase heart and lung capacity while improving your health (and burning calories at the same time). In addition to accommodating a wide variety of users with its lengthened 18 inch/46 centimeter stride, the Schwinn 418 Elliptical Trainer also incorporates an articulating footplate, which follows the natural motion of your foot and supports your heel throughout the entire stride motion. Additional features of Schwinn's 418 Elliptical Trainer include a grip heart-rate monitoring and a high-inertia drive system using an oversized flywheel and Poly V-belt. The quiet magnetic resistance Eddy Current Brake provides a smooth ride. The more than ten workout programs include: rolling, valley, fat burn, ramp, plateau, intervals, mountain, heart rate, and manual mode. An LCD display shows time, speed, distance, revolutions per minute, resistance level, calories and calories per hour, load, and heart rate and course profile.

By simulating motions experienced through walking, stepping, cycling, and skiing, elliptical machines allow for a smooth and fluid motion while building strength in the arms and legs. Similar to the exercise position for treadmills, elliptical trainers are used by standing in an upright position while holding the handrails of the machine. With elliptical trainers, however, your feet remain in the foot pedals throughout the exercise regimen and circulate in a smooth and seamless motion, resulting in little to no impact on the knees, back, and hips. Elliptical trainers are compatible for all ages and fitness levels and allow you to select the difficulty level through the incline and intensity settings. Additionally, elliptical trainers allow you to determine the complexity of your workout based on your needs, all while listening to music, watching television, or reading a magazine while exercising in the comfort and safety of your own home. Although different types of elliptical trainers offer an assortment of features, many of them include an array of challenging programs, forward and reverse directional movement, EKG grip pulse handles, a lightweight portable design with easy fold-up capability, and a monitor displaying calories burned, distance, speed, time, and heart rate. Other types of exercise machines, namely treadmills and bikes, offer excellent cardiovascular exercise and muscular training for the legs in a forward-motion exercise. Elliptical trainers take this to the next level by offering an upper and lower body workout with dual motion, challenging and diverse programs, and a low-impact exercise machine that won't strain sensitive joints.

Has everything I expected based on reviews and description May 11, 2008 Great product. Did a lot of research and felt overwhelmed at times before finally deciding on the Schwinn. If you are looking for a great elliptical to work out on and does the job well, this is the one. I am so glad I did not listen to the neg. reviews about ellipticals in this price range. I was afraid that if I didn't spend $2000 on one I would regret it, not so. If you are on the fence and don't know what to do just buy it. It has been smooth, normal amount of noise which I find to be very little and feels very sturdy. Great stride length and I am 5ft.8. Can be used 5-7 days a week without any problems. I have been on gym quality machines and this does the same job. Increases your heart rate, arms move, digital programs, pulse reader, timer. I would buy it all over again. It took my husband and I 1.5 hours to put together and was easy to do.
Fantastic piece of equipmentMay 08, 2008 I am so pleased with this machine. It is so quiet, and I love the features. The computer is easy to use, the resistance makes for a good workout, and the price is awesome! I highly recommend this purchase, you won't be sorry.
Great MachineMay 06, 2008 This elliptical is great - it is very sturdy and the motions are smooth and not very noisy. I am very happy with this purchase.

Motor gave out after 3 weeks of useMay 02, 2008 I purchased my Schwinn Elliptical 418 on 3/24/08. It arrived without incident on 4/8/08. I researched elliptical for about two months, reading hundreds of reviews on a number of sites and settled on the 418 because of the generally positive reviews price. I could not beat the price of $499 through Amazon with free shipping. Sears carried the same elliptical and I could have picked it up locally (i.e. had it within days) but their price was $999!
Upon arrival, my husband put the elliptical together. He said it was not too bad however, he is very mechanically inclined.
I used the elliptical for 3 weeks without incident. Then on 4/28, less than three weeks after receipt, I began to have problems. I hopped on the elliptical to begin my work out and the screen blinked out. I had been running it on batteries and decided that I need to go ahead and plug in the adapter. After doing so, I got back on the machine and noticed that now, when using a manual program, level 1 was much more difficult than it had been in past exercise sessions. Level 7 ended up being the most difficult and now level 16 was the easiest.
I called the customer service line and waited 64 minutes. I had read in other reviews that it is not uncommon to be on hold for an extended period The woman that I spoke with was very pleasant. She advised me that if I had moved the elliptical, which I had, that a wire may have come loose. She also stated that when switching power sources (battery to adapter) I would need to let the elliptical sit for at least 1 hour if not 24 hours. She walked me through checking the wires on recommendation I let the machine sit for what turned out to be 48 hours.
On 4/30 I got ready to try the elliptical out again. But, the resistance problem remained (1 hard, 7 harder 16 easiest). I called customer service again, thankfully, I only waited for 2 minutes! I explained my problem to the woman I spoke. She first thought that the wires of the machine were reversed which was causing the backwards resistance levels, but when I explained that the machine had worked fine the first three weeks, she stated that the motor must be bad. She made arrangements to have a new motor sent.
I have not yet received the motor as of this writing (5/2/08). But I will update this review after the motor arrives and is installed.
Subsequently, I noticed another post where the motor went bad on someone's 418 and after the motor was sent a technician came out to install it. I was not offered this option so I will need to check into that with another call.
I gave the machine 3 stars at this point because I really enjoyed using it up until it broke and because customer service has been very nice so far. We'll see how it goes.
Excellent WorkoutMay 02, 2008 Product was delivered by ABF and they did an amazing job of meeting delivery estimate. Driver was very courteous and placed the unit where required. It took me approximately 3 hours to set it up and since then have been using the unit daily. It is only a month since I purchased this elliptical and I am pleased with the performance. It certainly gives you a good workout.
