 Great for walking/hiking...less comfortable for calisthenics and runningMar 18, 2008
First off, this vest is not designed for running or calisthenics while loaded to the full 84 lbs. I was able to load it with 60 and still get away with pushups. Any more than that, and the elastic belt doesn't hold the front of it tight enough to your belly.
Anyway, on to what it was actually designed for- body hardening! For those of us that desire the ability to haul heavy things on our back (firefighters, military, or anyone who's hardcore), this thing is awesome! Hiking and walking long distances with 84 lbs of XVest challenges the majority of muscles in your body...my shoulders, torso, back, and legs were all fatigued after just a few laps up and down the hills of my suburban neighborhood.
Furthermore, the claim the company makes of 'dynamic respiratory resistance' is true...it's common sense and pretty low-tech, but having large amounts of weight on your chest makes it slightly harder to breath. Whether this translates to improved atheletic performance is anyone's guess.
Most importantly, the vest was balanced and didn't strain my back. Anyone who hikes with a backback that weighs 50% of their bodyweight or more will tell you that backpacks can wreck your back over the long term even if you're in great shape. Because the Xvest is balanced, I found it less painful than training with a backpack.
This is a great product to buy if you want to harden your muscles, strengthen your bones, build endurance, and burn calories.
*word to the wise: when bumping up the weight on this vest, take into account not just what your muscles can handle, but what your bones and joints can as well. I learned the hard way that subjecting your feet to more than they were built to handle results in sore joints and connective tissue. I ardently suggest building up gradually and using footwear that has extra support in the arch, heel, and ankle with this vest as this alleviated the problem for me.

First off, for 99% of the population, this vest is WAY too heavy. the company recommends a training weight of 4% to 10% of your bodyweight, so keep that in mind when ordering. Yes my ego made me order the heaviest!
Now about the product. It arrived in a timely manner. (About 8 days) The vest is very good quality with heavy durable stitching. The weights are removable in 1 lb increments.They sit in individual pockets so there is no shifting during activity. The vest is adjustable both at the shoulder and the waist. The waist cinches tightly enough that there is not a great deal of "pull" on your shoulders. The product comes with written instructions and a DVD demonstration.
When using the product I would recommend starting with a light weight and slowly increasing. 5-10 lbs doesnt sound like much, but you will be surpised. I went for a brisk 30 minute walk with 24lbs (That ego again!) and I was wiped!
Overall I am quite peased with my purchase.
